In a recently posted article on François Gautier’s website, he lists the names of 50 people who can be described as enemies of Hindus and Hinduism. He says that he created the list, which is incomplete, without malice aforethought.
Here is the list, 50 Biggest Enemies of Hindus (Dead or Alive), including the reasons he gives to justify his choice of enemies — Editor
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who along with a few hundred men, stood his ground against the most powerful emperor of his times, has practically no place in Indian history books and is often described as a petty chieftain or even a plunderer. So is Maharana Pratap, the only Rajput who fought against the Mughals and actually defeated Akbar in Haldighati.
Hindus tend to merge and melt wherever they live—and in the process, lose some of their identities and togetherness. And finally the most deadly and vicious intellectuals that we have reviewed above, are Hindus most of them. They are the ones that should be targeted, in a non-violent but firm manner. – Francois Gautier, 13 June 2016. The list has been edited by a staff writer at Newsgram and again by the editor of Bharata Bharati. See the original here.

2020.08.27 02:48 kennethangered Your ego is the 'antichrist'

TL/DR: You are that which is reading this right now, that which you are not is that which is thinking about what you are reading right now.
TL/DR take 2: Hang onto your ego, to quote the Beach Boys. But do so loosely, to quote 38 Special.
“Where is it that we were together? Who were you that I lived with? The brother. The friend. Darkness, light. Strife and love. Are they the workings of one mind? The features of the same face? Oh, my soul. Let me be in you now. Look out through my eyes. Look out at the things you made. All things shining.” ~ The Thin Red Line, dir. Terrence Malick (1998)
“Years will come and years will go I just wanted you to know That people places names and faces Are dying in the skies before they're born And you can't turn those feelings off Even though you can make them stop It was told in times that came before That someone with less would give you more” ~ Hella, Anarchists Just Wanna Have Fun
Two Egos: The first thing to get out of the way is the two egos, because there are two in our lexicon and the vast majority of people confuse or conflate them. The first ego is the one stemming from ancient philosophy and early-20th century psychoanalysis. This ego is more or less synonymous with your waking consciousness. It is that which is reading these words this very moment, aware of the sensation of the floor against the soles of your feet and the fabric of your shirt on your torso, and that which is receiving thoughts or impressions from your subconscious mind about what you’d really, really like to have for dinner. This ego, at least in the Jungian sense, is the conscious awareness which is spread throughout the entire human body (if you so wish, you could include the chakras or the mapping of the sefirot onto the body in order to understand this; as in, ‘heart-mind’ or ‘gut feeling’--it is important to note that we have neurons in the heart and the gut, not only in the brain).
The intellect, or rational and logical mind, is not synonymous with this ego--although it’s an integral and key component of it. Speaking mythologically, this is the promethean ha-satan (I am speaking gnostically as well as mythologically, this satan is not the satan of traditional myth or, rather, it is a different angle from which to view this force) who desires to grab the fruit from the tree and have the scales fall from its eyes. It is the root of curiosity, understanding, discernment, and self-consciousness. Often, this is a component of what people conflate with the second ego. Because in this intellect there is a strong push or pull towards pride and arrogance.
The other ego, though, is not at all synonymous (at least in totality) with pride or arrogance. The second ego, and the word used to describe it, comes from poor translations and Westernized speculations and commentaries on Eastern religious texts, specifically Buddhism and the doctrine of anatta (no-self). The word 'ego' was already by the 1950s and 1960s (when this change in understanding more or less took place in the West, and in America specifically) conflated with the phenomenon (or sin, depending on your persuasion) of pride and/or vanity. And in a sense, this is an accurate use of the second term although it’s highly limited. The problem with Westerners coming to Buddhism, Vedanta, or any other Eastern tradition is that we inevitably bring our cultural baggage to that ‘new’ religious tradition--and the notions of pride and vanity are a part of that baggage. No-self or anatta, although different in kind and degree, could be compared more accurately to a passage from the NT in Galatians, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” (Galatians, 2:20). Basically, and I will try to use language to describe what this means in lay terms--a horribly ill-suited means for articulating these kinds of notions or ideas (hence myth and art)--is that the One of reality is not One unless it includes, transcends, and works through you. You, yourself, are an aspect of this divine One. And, in fact, this divine One ‘uses’ you (not in an exploitative, slave/master way but rather think of it as a person using their hands to feed themselves food) in its never-ending act of creation (Genesis is a ‘metaphor’ for all times and places). In this sense, you have no ‘self’ because whatever this self is is actually an emanation and articulation of this One’s activity--your conscious ego (of my first definition) is ‘on loan’ from on high. And, in the gnostic sense, this ego or waking consciousness is actually a ‘descent’ of this One into matter and temporal limitation (Thou art That; As Above, So Below). This is the core of the Western awakening experience and, essentially, the core of all Western mysticism, magick, and occultism. The second ego, that which is most-often conflated and confused with the first, is the thing standing in your way of experiencing and realizing this for yourself at a visceral level (reading this and understanding what I mean doesn’t suffice, you have to experience this for yourself regardless of how many books, YouTube videos, podcasts, or meditation retreats you consume; be wary of spiritual bypassing and/or spiritual materialism).
This second ego is, like the first, both individual and collective. By this I mean that, like with the first ego, every single one of us has subjective awareness and sense-experience. It is in this subjectivity that you will experience your ego, but it is not necessarily where you will experience another’s ego. And, in fact, it will come down heavily to your degree of self-awareness whether you will in fact be able to discern your ego from the rest of your conscious faculties. To help understand what I mean, I like to illustrate the ego as like an extra layer or shirt of protection. You wear a shirt or a coat to protect yourself from the elements, to hide your body either due to shame, dignity, or politeness, and to show off who you think you are or what you want others to think you are. This second ego works in a very, very similar fashion. It is the sense of separateness innate to our conscious experience, a layer of psychological protection that allows the first ego to simply function in any way whatsoever. It is that which allows you to know, instinctively, one object from another (unless you are in dire need of psychiatric help I would hope you could tell the difference between a banana and a Volkswagen, for example). It is also that which allows you to discern what is right from what is wrong (I don’t necessarily mean this in a moralistic or Judeo-Christian sense, although a recognition of what ‘sin’ means would help: it means to miss the mark, to make a mistake) for you, your loved ones, family, community, country, planet, and cosmos. And, conversely, it is also that which can delude you into thinking you yourself know far more than you actually do. For instance, this ego (sense of separateness) fights tooth and nail to be considered different from those around itself. In many ways it is different (everyone has their own unique path through this life), but this can be carried to horrifying levels of racism, sexism, nationalism, and on and on. And, in an ironic twist, it can convince one that they themselves are so virtuous that never would they ever commit the crimes or atrocities connected to the aforementioned ‘isms’--which couldn’t be further from the truth. It is both that which allows you to escape karma (which can only really be ‘escaped’ in relative terms while incarnated) and also that which allows one to create more of it. Karma, sans creeds and dogmas of moralization, is simply cause-and-effect.
But Why is it the Antichrist?: The antichrist is, despite pop culture items like The Omen, not necessarily an embodied individual or ego (of the first definition). The antichrist can be discerned by, basically, taking a sober and open-minded look at who Jesus the Christ was (or was thought or written down as being) and thinking critically of what the opposite of that would be. Christ was an individual. Christ was one with the Father (Thou art That; As Above, So Below). Christ worked miracles not from himself, but through the Father. Christ wouldn’t even consider himself a good person, “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good--except God alone.” (Mark, 10:18). And he took the sins (mistakes of higher and lower degrees) of humanity upon himself and, although I know he is a controversial public figure, I think Jordan Peterson is right on this meaning that Christ realized on a deep, cosmic level that he was capable and perhaps even inclined to do and partake in all the worst acts that humans are capable of (something our second ego fights vehemently against). Also, in Jung's Answer to Job (where Jung views and articulates Yahweh not so much as a metaphysical reality but rather as a literary figure), God is presented as nearly-unconscious or sleepwalking through actions before becoming incarnated as Jesus the Christ. In other words, God had to experience God through being separate from God in order to realize his own cruelty through Satan (Satan, in Job, makes a bet with God to see if the righteous Job will betray his love and worship of God and, to do this, Satan pretty much takes everything from Job but his life) in order to change into the all-loving God as depicted within Christian myth--I do not, personally, feel this way but it's pretty damn close to my own opinion or belief on the relation of God to Satan.
So, what would the opposite of this be?
Let's start with the notion of the individual or individualism, as that’s part of what the antichrist most favors becoming and denouncing (the second ego, or antichrist, both loves and hates everything--but only in the name of itself). Often, the way we in our culture pursue individualism or individuality is through peacocking. We desire to show ourselves off, to make a fuss about who we think we are and demand that others (in one way or another) not only recognize and respect this, but fall in love with it. This pattern is pretty much everywhere, but you can see it most clearly in adolescents when they are attempting to fit into a particular clique or subculture or, conversely, rail as hard as they can against all cliques and subcultures as your stereotypical internet edgelord (I was one of them). This is fine for the most part, but it becomes pathological when one begins to see their own group as inherently conflicting or in opposition to another (whether this is true or not is not the point, because all that matters for this particular phenomena is the perception of opposition). At best, you have mods and rockers duking it out at Brighton Beach. At worst, you have hundreds of millions dead during the first seventy years of the 20th century. The first aspect, the desiring to belong or become something else, is a fine pursuit and goal. But the ego cannot stand stopping at that, it must destroy (either internally or externally) that which it deems opposed to its own goals, identities, values, or history. And no psychological factor can be destroyed, it can either be sublimated into a higher goal or mode of being or relegated to the shadow (“The stone which the builders had rejected has become the cornerstone,” Psalm 118:22) where it exerts its influence and control of the conscious ego from the sidelines, in the dark, and subtly but with great personal and collective devastation--you can see this in everything from superstitions, rationalizations of behavior, addictions, violent outbursts, and so on. The ego will always fail to inform you of the immortality of psychological processes (archetypes, spirits, gods, demons, angels, and so on--not the conscious ego itself, although I have faith that that too is immortal, although not in the way most probably assume or believe it to be). It will tell you, either with urges, articulated thought, or--if stemming from outside yourself--campaign slogans and advertisements, that the promised land is just on the other side of the hill called ‘them’ or ‘it’. And that the proper way to reach the other side is to, in one way or another, destroy this ‘them’ or ‘it’ (it could be capitalism, communism, acne, love handles, your virginity, your parents, your children, your friends, your society, and even yourself in the case of suicidal ideation).
What does it mean to be one with the Father?
In a certain sense, it is to become connected to the source of all being in such a way that the charade of the ego (in this sense, it’s best to see the ego as aligned and almost synonymous with either the Buddhist Maya or the Christian Satan) and the game it has played on us at least since the dawn of the agrarian revolution (although I’m fairly certain it’s been with us as a psychological function for far, far longer and is probably an outgrowth of the massive increase in the homo genus’ brain size over the last few hundred million years). I pick this date or era (that of the agrarian revolution), because it was perhaps the schism point between humans as social entities and between humans and nature itself. No longer would tribes be limited to a few hundred, because now you could coordinate and make enough food, homes, and goods for thousands. This required strict adherence to hierarchical dominion, partitioning of labor, introduction of moral codes, policing, and eventually slavery. It also meant the codification and dogmatizing of spirituality which, until then, was mainly handled by shamanistic types who would help a tribe with physical, spiritual, and mental health. No longer could you and I, members of the same tribe, see ourselves or even behave as if we were on the same level playing field in acting towards the betterment of our group, tribe, or nation. There would now be middle-men, deferrals, classes, and whole mythologies worked up and given to us in order to make us okay and complacent with this new reality. Currency, also, was developed as a means to motivate and fool people into doing labor which they would otherwise loath (a practice which we are all still, sadly, abundantly in the throes of). In more ways than one, this history was necessary in order for us as a species to get to where we are now and much of the ills of our past were due to ignorance of one another’s intrinsic divine qualities but, to be one with the Father (and you really, really don’t need to consider it as ‘one with the Father’; you could equally feel one with the mother or goddess/god because, in this and other aspects of spirituality, language can be more of a hindrance than an advantage) these veils of illusion absolutely need to fall. Currency (and this goes for all currency) is inherently valueless, it only has value because we project value upon it. The degree to which a McDonald’s employee helps society may be different than the degree to which a politician, fire fighter, or schoolteacher does but, at the end of the day, they both work towards the betterment of society and are integral components of that society. Simply because you or someone else is in some kind of leadership or prestige position does not make you or them either higher or lower, more connected or less connected to divinity, or, in some cases, more or less important to that society’s functioning. Of course someone in leadership positions can do and change more in any given society, but the actions of a nearly-anonymous citizen will reverberate in subtle ways beyond themselves and can, over a long enough period of time, butterfly effect into something just as grand as any politician’s actions. When the veil falls and you see yourself as one with divinity and the cosmos, the distinctions and classifications of the ego do not so much go away or vanish as they are diminished and relativized in relation to that divinity. A king of the world is nothing but dust in the eyes of God and, to quote a paraphrase of the Bhagavad Gita by the one and only Duncan Trussell (Clancy in The Midnight Gospel), “It is better to be an honest street sweeper than a dishonest king.” Being one with the Father has you realizing that no sin (remember, mistake) is unforgiven, that all the faults and missteps merely led you to the moment where you became one with divinity, and that the you you have been trying to run away from for years is where you actually belong and that this tiny, miniscule, nearly-helpless individual that you are is anointed. You may have problems and difficulties, fears and mental perturbations, hallucinations and delusions, sexual hangups and shameful fetishes, but there is absolutely nothing inherently wrong with you ever.
What does it mean if a being works miracles not through itself, but through its source?
This part is heavily tied with the one right after it, that of humility in the face of Goodness itself. Many of these work on, stem from, and have their bearing in relation to other aspects of Christ. This part will, generally speaking, only be an issue for those who practice any sort of magick. For instance, if you do a ritual with the aim of causing some change within reality and that change occurs, it is very easy to believe and assume that you yourself caused that change. And the ego, for its part, will damn well make sure you feel this way. But the truth is that, really, divinity did what it did because that’s what divinity does. God (or whatever term you may prefer) is continually at every moment attempting to shower us with love but our egos, for one reason or another, block this and work to make us feel as if love were a limited resource on this planet. I should note that in this sense, every desired object or experience is a representation from on high of love--love is within and transcends all things everywhere, regardless of how terrible. So a new car, relationship, job, or even the loss of the above is a representation of love. But I wouldn’t even dare to try and use logic or reasoning to prove this because, for what it's worth, you absolutely must feel loss when it occurs for you (so long, of course, that you actually felt some sort of connection to the lost thing itself). So if you are playing around with The Secret, Chaos Magick, or any other mode of manifestation I would highly advise you to do so with the knowledge that your ego will try to steal the very message this miracle is meant to show which is, essentially, that you already possess everything you desire (you just have to remember that you do). And also that, at the end of the day, all things come from and return to the source from which they came--you can’t take whatever it is with you.
And what does it mean to take the sins of others upon yourself?
It is not, in a literal sense, taking responsibility for them although there is an aspect of your consciousness which is seeped in and takes part in that of others (but this is not the same as being the one who commits any given sinful act). Rather, as Jordan Peterson (I’m aware of how controversial he is, but the man deserves credit on this front because otherwise I’d be accused of stealing this notion) has pointed out, it is the visceral conscious realization that that which we call evil and sin is housed within each and every ego (of the first sense) and psyche. The predilection towards harm or destruction merely for the sake of harm or destruction is within all of us to pretty much the same degree, it’s just that some of us find ourselves in positions of opportunity while others do not. It is fundamentally a human aspect of a divine principle of negation, because without negation no act of creation could ever take place. But, in the case of evil deeds or inclinations, it is negation without any genuine thought of addition; the two key components for any act of creation. As an example, if you wish to lose weight you absolutely must change your diet. But a negation without addition (in this case, substituting one food for another) would be anorexic and devastating to the individual’s health. One must sublimate an urge deemed negative into something else, but you cannot do that with negation because negation is always aching for its addition (hence the Jungian shadow, which is an outgrowth of this stalled function). Having the veil fall is not only a positive, heartwarming experience. To become one with the One is to realize that, like the One, you and I are capable (and, in fact, willing) to commit and partake in pretty much any atrocity if that atrocity aligns with our emotional impulses (in which case our second ego will rationalise it as ‘acceptable’). But to take the sins of others onto yourself is to take responsibility for those atrocities in such a way so that you, if only you, never partake in them ever again.
So with all this in mind, how is this second ego synonymous with the antichrist?
Since I am averse to strict dogma, creeds, or traditions that would desire me or anyone else to scrape their knees before divinity I cannot assent directly to any orthodox notion of what the antichrist is other than it being polarly opposed or in contradiction to Christ (not so much the individual Jesus the Christ of 2,000+ years ago, but to the title of Christ--The Anointed One). In this case, then, the antichrist is not any single individual person although, like with the second ego definition, it is experienced subjectively (although you do of course encounter the egos of others all the time). I will say here that it is really, really hard to pin down (aside from what I’ve already written) how to recognize the ego when it shows itself. Sometimes it is obvious, as when you consciously think demeaning thoughts or idolizing thoughts regarding another person. Other times, it slips in quietly and makes off with all your emotional stability (parable of the thief in the night). A good measure would be to take note of how many varied “I’s” you have running around in your head and how much, almost instinctively, you take this to be you speaking to you (it is not). Although I have admittedly received many ideas from Jung and Jungian theorists, I admit that thoughts as they present themselves to us are habituated patterns of language sourced from every conversation we’ve ever had, film we’ve watched, song we’ve heard, book we’ve read, or have overheard from others (in other words, on a surface level they are only sometimes aligned with reality). This “I” inside, the loudest one and the most-commonly heard, is usually a hodgepodge of who you really are innately and whatever it is you’ve been told you are by others (be they parents, friends, lovers, or authority figures of any and every stripe) and this “I”’s job is to navigate and bring coherence to these disparate notions of who or what you are--which would be a positive function of our second ego. It becomes the antichrist only when this “I” is in direct opposition to who you really are (which is never total because even the most devastatingly depressed person has a favorite flavor of soda) and begins to influence decisions you make within the outer reality which will go on and on and on creating more negativity within the world or, to put it simply, creating more karma to work through on the road to enlightenment.
To close, I would like to point out that once this recognition is had most fears and superstitions regarding the antichrist pretty much fall away (which is really good for Christians or those who, like myself, were raised Christian but eventually denounced or left the faith). This is because you realize that, fundamentally, it is only your ego that needs taking care of. It is not and has never been your job to force another to change (which isn’t to say you ought not confront those who annoy, harm, or otherwise disturb you--it is merely the realization that you simply cannot alter another being’s free will). And that now, in the 21st century, there are resources in abundance to help you navigate how to confront and sublimate your ego towards the good (although I would advise you to use this ego and its positive function of discernment in order to separate the bullshit from the pearls--and only you can tell what those pearls are). I also wrote this out because I believe the ego is fading in its influence over people but, as it fades, it will fight tooth and nail to maintain control over each and every conscious ego it’s attached to (watch the news if you want my proof of this). If, for whatever reason, what I am saying makes no sense and you think I’m deluded then walk away from everything I have written and forget about it. If, for whatever reason, what I have written resonates with you then do not thank me or give me credit for this. I am paraphrasing most of what I’ve written from Carl Jung, the Gospels and Revelations, Aldous Huxley, Ram Dass, Erich Neumann, various psychologists who--if I were to list their names--would take up an entire new paragraph, various Kabbalists and Christian esotericists (Rav Berg and Valentin Tomberg being the main two, with a hell of a lot of Soren Kierkegaard thrown in), magicians like Aleister Crowley, Israel Regardie, Jason Louv, and Damien Echols, as well as that thing I’d consider least convincing or persuasive of all, my personal meditative and/or entheogenic (psychedelic) experiences.

The DHAMMAPADA - The Words of Buddha, the teaching of the Awakened - FREE BUDDHIST BOOK PART 1
Siddhartha Gautama
DHAMMAPADA
The Law of Virtue and its Path according to Siddhartha Gautama
Préface and translation
by Israël Nazir
A MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR
Salam, Shalom, Peace
The people of the Book or ahl al-Kitab in Arabic is a theological concept whose origin is found in the suras of the Koran. It is by this name that Muhammad, ﺻﺍﻌﺲ, the prophet of Islam, calls the Christian and Jewish communities that lived in the Arabian Peninsula in his time. He names them so because they have access to a Book, ie the Tanakh for the Jewish communities and the Gospels for the Christian communities. The interlocutors who listen to him on the market square in Mecca are Semites of Arabic language and tradition, who have no Book to refer to and whose existentialist beliefs are based on a polytheistic pantheon with low moral values.
The inhabitants of Mecca see in these religious communities from abroad, an identity danger for their culture. This feeling even becomes more and more evident because more and more Arabs are converting to Christianity. Mahomet, ﺻﺍﻌﺲ, himself received by his adoptive uncle a teaching to the Eastern Christians in Syriac. He is a caravaner who become significant. He is in his forties and is well educated in the Jewish Tanakh. He presents himself to them as a messenger who came to communicate to them in Arabic, this knowledge so precious that the people of the Book have and to which they do not have access.
Does he not say in essence this?
“Each people of this earth received from God a messenger who came to teach them the Truth. Those who listened to it, received a book and great wisdom, those who refused, ended up forgotten and found its vestiges in Syria and Egypt ... "
The editions ahl al-Kitab, claim this origin and aim to continue the teaching of the Book to the inhabitants of Earth. The literary and theological definition of our Book is limited to the Dhammapada of Siddhartha Gautama, to the Proverbs of Solomon, to the Gospels of Thomas, Marc, Matthew, Luke and John, to the Tao Te King of Lao-Tzu, to the Analects of Confucius, to the Bhagavad -Gita of Krishna and the Koran of Muhammad, ﺻﺍﻌﺲ.
Although the theological identity of the people of the Book applied primarily to the Jewish and Christian communities who lived nearby in the Arabian Peninsula. The term later included religious communities living in neighboring countries. Thus the Hindu and Buddhist communities who lived beyond the sea in India and the Zoroastorian communities who lived beyond the desert in Persia were also recognized as ahl al-Kitab.
This is why, the vision which animates us is not that of melting all the religions in a single mold, nor that of mixing all the traditions in an empty syncretism. In reality, we believe that when we study the Book, we realize that religions all speak of universal values that transcend beliefs in identity and these values speak of: Peace, Virtue, Love, Harmony, Wisdom, Freedom and Universality. Consequently, one cannot, intellectually speaking, believe that these values are at the origin of all the wars and massacre of this world.
If not. If that is the case, then:
What is Good?
What is the Best?
What is the Perfect?
We believe that each religious tradition is rich in unique lessons and that it carries within it, through its worship and culture, a beauty that cannot be equaled. We want to define ourselves as a stone sculptor who would leave aside his tools and who would be content only to polish the surface of the stone. Polish this stone and the 6 others:
“These 7 stones which conceal the truth within oneself and which form a whole of a greater truth. A more coherent building with greater cohesion. "
Our role is simple, it mainly consists in allowing the exchange of knowledge between believers of different faiths and traditions, we wish to do it in a theologically acceptable framework and we wish to do it in a format easy to understand, in the greatest number of possible languages.
We believe that when we study the Book. We open up to the cultures of this world. When we understand the cultures of this world, we can accept them. When one has accepted the traditions of this world he obtains great Wisdom.
In this Book which is at the foundation of all modern civilizations we have found a deep serenity: the Peace with oneself, the Peace with others. In this Book, we also found the answers to the existential debate which animates the man since his appearance. A debate specific to each and which will animate it throughout its life.
Who are we? Who is God? Where are we going? Where do we come from? What is Good? What is Evil? Why choose Good over Evil?
How to understand men? What motivates them? How to anticipate their actions?
In 2000 years man has changed little, yet humanity has evolved towards the best. Is it not because man has asked himself the essential questions from the start that Humanity has evolved towards the best?
Why does she ask herself these questions? It is because originally, everyone was asking the question, that people appeared to answer it ...

PREFACE
The Dhammapada is the collection of the most beautiful words of wisdom pronounced by the Buddha Siddhartha Gautama during his life. Collected by his many Bhikku disciples, these words were then transmitted orally as part of the Buddhist teaching of the Sangha communities.
Proverbs? Aphorisms or poetry? Recited, sung or prayed? Memorized, taught or practiced?
This collection of 423 verses constitutes in 26 chapters, the teaching of the awakened one: a teaching which it is necessary to practice on his behavior and which leads to Nirvana.
For the writing of this book, we used the French version available from Les éditions Albin Michel and the English version available on the website www.tipitaka.net.
For the translation of this book, we have tried to make the text intelligible and easy to understand for its listeners. Knowing its nature to be recited, we have also endeavored to restore its dynamics, its rhythm and its rhymes.
The translator of this book is Israel Nazir. This book is published in the public domain.
CONTEXT
The Dhammapada is with the Sermons of the Buddha, the oldest written Buddhist text found by modern archaeologists and historians. The oldest examples, written in Pali or Sanskrit, date from the 1st century AD. According to the oral transmission, the author of these texts is Siddhartha Gautama. A man that Buddhists define as remarkable and "well-behaved" who would have lived between the IVth and Vieme century BC in the territories of North East India, Nepal.
Siddhartha Gautama enjoyed a happy birth in the Hindu family of the Shakya clan chief. He is the prince and the year of his 29 years, he decides to leave office and lead a life made of deprivation and renunciation with a community of ascetics. The one who was later called the Sage of the Shakyas: "the Shakyamuni" undertook a life of asceticism for 6 years and devoted himself to these meditative and austere practices.
One memorable day, he became aware, after various meetings, of the suffering of this world and that afternoon, while he was sitting in meditation at the foot of a ficus tree. He made a vow not to move from this place until he had reached the ultimate truth.
The Buddhists say that during that first night and the long weeks that followed. Mara, afraid that he would get such a power, sent hordes of demons towards him who tempted him, assailed him with doubts and seized him with fear.
It was at this moment that the awakened Siddhartha Gautama succeeded in raising his spirit and reaching what Buddhists call enlightenment: "The Bohdi". A perfect and transcendent knowledge which leads to self-conquest and ultimate liberation. A truth which resides in the term of Dhamma, a polymorphic term which includes the senses of virtue, natural law, truth, practice, and teaching.
Understanding this knowledge, the young man who was celebrating his 35th birthyear began to teach his message. He gathered around him a group of 5 ascetic disciples and one day he began to speak to them. He began to explain to them what he had understood. This is what is called the first sermon: "The setting in motion of the wheel of the Law". In this sermon, he developed the founding Buddhist concepts: of the four noble truths, of suffering (Doukkha), of the state of dissatisfaction and of the Noble eightfold path, this path with 8 steps which leads to the extinction of suffering.
Recognized by his disciples as the instructor of universal knowledge, the peaceful and vigilant Buddha continued to deepen his teaching and subsequently defined the following concepts: The Anatman (without-self, without-ego, without-essence, without -Atman), impermanence and permanent dissatisfaction with all things, renunciation and thirst for desire, the exercise of meditation and personal development.
During the long period which followed Siddhartha Gautama prophesied his message, he traveled in the gangetic plain of central India and he taught his doctrine and practice to a multitude of people, from the noble to the street sweeper, from the merchants to the beggars, from Hindu priests to Jainist priests.
Before the end of his life, he founded the Sangha community, ie a community of men and women who decided to live according to Buddhist concepts, to perpetuate the oral teaching of the Buddha and to apply his practice on their lives. They promised to repeat it through the ages and through future lives. They promised to follow this path of virtue and to set in motion the wheel of the Law.
It was during the eighty-first year of his life when he was traveling painfully towards the locality of Kusinâgar, that he asked his disciples to put his bed between two trees. The man who was sick of food poisoning lay down in the governor’s park. He asked his disciples to go get him water. Some disciples understood the moment and began to cry. They called then this last ascetic who had asked to see him and who had one last question to ask him:
"Renouncing Gautama!" I have met several great renouncers in my life and each of them claims to be an Enlightened Brahmin. How do you know what's true? Are their teachings correct? "
The Well Gone, listened to him and answered him by teaching him the path of Enlightenment. This path with 8 steps which leads to the certainty of what is right.
Because if you observe a sage and you notice that he has a right word, a right action and a right livelihood then we know that this person has set out. If we continue to observe and notice that this person also makes right efforts, that he pays a right attention to all things and that he concentrates precisely on what he is doing, then we say that this person is in the upper current. Finally, when sometimes we meet a being who has, in addition, a right understanding and a right discernment, then we know with certainty that this person has accomplished the Noble Eightfold Path and that he deserves to be called an Awakened Brahmin.
The ascetic silently listened to the Awakened, developed his demonstration, he nodded eight times, having understood with a right discernment that he had heard the answer to his question: The Truth. He recognized in Siddhartha Gautama an Enlightened Brahmin and asked to join the Sangha community.
From then on this old man lying between two trees in the park of Governor Mallá, who is suffering from food poisoning, who has served the community until the last moments of his life, turned to his disciples and before to go out, said:
“All that exists will one day be destroyed. Never forget to strive for the development of virtue, focus and wisdom.”

CHAPTER 1: TWIN VERSES
Verse 1
The mind presupposes conditions, the mind is its chief and the conditions are shaped by the mind. If someone speaks or acts with an unpure spirit, then pain follows him as the wagon follows in the footsteps of the ox.
Verse 2
The mind presupposes conditions, the mind is its chief and the conditions are shaped by the mind. If someone with a saintly spirit speaks or acts, then happiness will follow him like his shadow.
Verse 3
They think: "He insulted me, he mistreated me, he cheated on me, he stole from me". The hatred of those who cherish such thoughts cannot be appeased.
Verse 4
They think: "He insulted me, he mistreated me, he cheated on me, he stole from me". The hatred of those who have no such thoughts is appeased.
Verse 5
Hatred has never extinguished the hatreds of this world. By love alone, hatred is extinguished. This is an old law.
Verse 6
The others do not understand that because of this we perish, those who have understood this, have their quarrels appeased.
Verse 7
He who delights in pleasure, without control or measure, immoderate in food, lazy, inert, this one in truth, Mara will overturn him as the wind overturns the weak tree.
Verse 8
One who contemplates the unpleasant, with well-controlled senses, moderate in food and with serenity and rectitude. Mara will not be able to overturn it like the wind could not overturn a mountain.
Verse 9
Anyone who is devoid of self-control, who is devoid of the sense of self, would he wear the yellow robe that he would not be worthy of it.
Verse 10
One who has spit out all his purulences, who is well established in moral rules, provided with self-control and essentiality, this one is truly worthy of the yellow robe.
Verse 11
In what has no meaning, he sees meaning, in what has meaning, he sees no interest. Whoever remains in the field of misconceptions, will never get to the point.
Verse 12
What is essential, he knows as essential, what is without essence, he knows as without essence. Whoever stays in the field of right ideas gets to the point.
Verse 13
Just as rain enters a house with a thatched roof, so desire enters an untrained heart.
Verse 14
Just as rain cannot enter a thatched house. Desire will not enter a well-trained heart.
Verse 15
He grieves in this life, he will grieve after this life, in all the worlds, the one who does evil is afflicted. He is afflicted and will suffer, carried by his impure actions.
Verse 16
He rejoices in this life, he will rejoice after this life, in all the worlds the good doer will be happy. He rejoices, he rejoices extremely, carried by his pure actions.
Verse 17
He laments in this life, he will mourn after this life, in all the worlds the one who does evil laments. "I did wrong" so he laments, suffering he goes to unhappy states.
Verse 18
He is happy in this life and he will be happy after this life, in all the worlds the good doer will be happy. "I did good" he rejoices and he is joyous carried towards the happy states.
Verse 19
Although he recites sacred texts a lot, he does not act in accordance with what he has studied; this inattentive man is like the guardian of one flock watching over another's flock; he is far from the beatitudes of the ascetic.
Verse 20
Although he rarely recites sacred texts, he nevertheless acts in accordance with the Dhammapada, he has rid himself of sensual pleasure, hatred and ignorance, knowing the truth, he has a completely free heart. It is by being not attached to anything from this world and by being not attached to anything after this life that he attains the beatitudes of the ascetic.
CHAPTER 2 - VERSES ON VIGILANCE
Verse 21
Vigilance is the path to the undead, neglectness is the path to death. The vigilant will not die. The negligent person lives as if he were already dead.
Verse 22
Meditating on this, the sage is vigilant, he rejoices in vigilance, delights in the field of Aryas.
Verse 23
The wise men who are constantly meditating, the wise men who are constantly striving, will gain access when they have freed themselves from their ties to the incomparable Nirvana.
Verse 24
In stages increases the glory of one who is energetic, attentive to his actions, pure and just, who controls himself and who leads an upright and vigilant life.
Verse 25
It is through effort, ardor, discipline and self-control that the sage will make himself an unsinkable island of himself.
Verse 26
The ignorant and the foolish take pleasure in neglect, but the sage protects vigilance as the greatest treasure.
Verse 27
Do not like vices, do not frequent sensual pleasures. He who is ardent and meditative obtains abundant happiness.
Verse 28
When the wise man frees himself from his bonds with the help of the saintly spirit, this sage will be without grief going up to the palace of transcendent knowledge and walking his view over the ignorants who suffer, as a mountain dweller walks his view over the people of the plain.
Verse 29
Vigilant among the negligent, awake among the sleepy, the wise man advances like a fast horse. He leaves behind the old horse.
Verse 30
By ardor, Sakka became the chief of the Devas. Hard work is always praised, vice is always despised.
Verse 31
The Bhikkhou who delights in ardor and who looks at the neglect with fear, advances like fire. It burns all ties, big and small.
Verse 32
The Bhikkhou who delights in ardor and who considers neglect with fear is not exposed to falling, he is close to Nirvana.

2020.06.21 04:26 mohitkv A Harrapan seal showing a possible connection between the Indus Valley Civilization (IVC) and Hinduism.

Excerpts from an article from 2017 about a terracotta seal found in Nepal that possibly shows Arjuna and Krishna with the artform similar to that of other Harrapan art.
The tablet was authenticated by Oxford Authentication using thermoluminescence or TL dating method on May 14th, 2019. The result of the authentication confirms that the date of the firing was between 2,300 and 3,600 years ago, that is, 1,600 BCE to 300 BCE. This date corresponds to the end of the Indus Valley Civilisation (1,500 BCE) and the historical period (600 BCE), a period known as the Painted Grey Ware Culture, which has been associated with settlements at Hastinapura and the villages mentioned in the Mahabharata – Indraprastha (Delhi), Panprastha (Panipat), Sonprastha (Sonipat), Tilprastha (Tilpat) and Vyagprastha (Baghpat). The TL result means that the story of the Mahabharata was much older, and the tablet was used as an illustration for ritual or storytelling purposes.
If the two figures are Krishna and Arjuna, this would be the first portrayal of the Gitopadesham scene which led to the Bhagavad Gita. The two figures are wearing Harappan-style headbands. In fact, to quote Pine, “the overall art is much more akin to Harappa than to Mauryan sensibilities.”This terracotta tablet is a very exciting discovery. It takes the Bhagavad Gita and the Mahabharata to a much earlier period than what is generally accepted.
However, whereas the Sanauli wheel is solid, the Nepal wheel is spoked. The spoked wheel is described in the Rig Veda and is considered to be uniquely Vedic. However, Dr BB Lal has identified a wheel with spokes depicted in a terracotta from Rakhigarhi, while Dr SR Rao had also shown a depiction of a wheel with spokes from Lothal. This means that it was already present in Harappan culture. The date of this tablet begs a question—was the spoked wheel Harappan or Vedic, or both?
Can this be considered as an argument for a greater impact of IVC on Hinduism? Also, are there more evidences for this?

2020.06.09 15:49 Raridan The Beagle Experiment

“Life will not be contained. Life breaks free. It expands to new territories, crashes through barriers, painfully, maybe even dangerously.” Jeff Goldblum, Jurassic Park
—————————————————————————
(The following is transcribed from a speech on [redacted]/[redacted]/2006)
"On May 11, 1820, The HMS Beagle set sail from Woolwich, England, and set course to furtively study the shorelines of South America under Lieutenant Pringle Stokes, who was later replaced by Lieutenant Robert Fitzroy following his suicide near Cape Horn, Chile. On this ship included future naturalist Charles Robert Darwin, a man who would lay the ambitious blueprint for current evolutionary reasoning and generate the earth shattering theory on the progressive advancement of organic bodies in his controversial book, On the Origin of Species. This scholarly publication tells that organisms demand several thousand years to mutate. However, does that necessarily need to be the case? Could man evolve tremendously in several weeks instead of several millennia? The outlook is simplistic, yet groundbreaking. Place people in situations where they are required to acclimate the way we require them to." Dr. Braylon Dragich

Title: The Beagle Experiment
Author: Dr. Braylon Dragich
Question: Can humans evolve if placed under constant pressure?
Hypothesis: If the subjects are placed under continuous pressure, then they will evolve because of them growing used to said pressure.
Material List: . Three subjects . Three 22ft by 22ft by 22ft rooms . Full-time staff and personnel . 2904 ft of padding . Cochlear implants . Two reliable heating and cooling systems . Three journals . Three reliable communication systems . audio readings and music
Procedures:
  1. Adopt three subjects at infantcy from local adoption centers.
  2. Raise subjects until they reach the age of 14.
  3. Place three subjects in rooms that force them to continuously adapt because of constant pressure.
  4. Have continuous doctoral and psychological examinations to see the effect on their physical and mental health.
  5. Allow them to have communication and distractions to stop them from going mentally ill.
  6. Continue experiments until it can be affirmatively proven that the trails are a success or a failure.
  7. Terminate subjects through lethal injection.

Journal log
Day 1
I was always told that my life would be substantial. That me existing would boost the world into the future. Thinking back now, I honestly can't see how sitting in a dark room helps anyone. I guess this is my life now. Just sitting for eternity in a pitch-black room. Aodh and Sleddog talked to me today. Sleddog was always the innocent one of the group, and Aodh, as much as he wanted to seem tough, was always kind to us. I honestly wish that they were never put into this. They should be in high school, like in The Catcher in the Rye, struggling with tests and worrying approximately girls, or sports, or college, or whatever. Anything but this. I just want to know that we'll be getting out of this.

Experiment Log: Week 1
Author: Dr. Braylon Dragich
24181 log: There has been a great increase in optic nerve function, however, the result is not enough for him to be able to see his surroundings. Nonetheless, we will continue to phase two, as it needs to be started immediately.
96185 log: He has been adjusting well to his surroundings, and has gotten used to the hot temperatures. He shall proceed to phase 2, where the room will be increased by 10 ° F , or from 80 to 90.
12135 log: Similar to 96185, he has been adjusting well to his surroundings and has gotten used to the hot temperatures. He shall proceed to phase 2, where the room will be decreased by 10 ° F, or from 40 to 30. The following is a transcribed conversation between Subject 2481/Erebus and Subject 96185/Aodh on Day 11 of The Beagle Experiment:
—————————————————————————
Erebus : Aodh, are you there?
Aodh: Yeah, what's up?
Erebus: I don't think I'm alone here.
Aodh: What?
Erebus: I can hear something...
Aodh: It's the static that they play in your room. Honestly, it creeps me out too.
Erebus: No, it's something under the static.
Aodh: What?
Erebus: I can hear whispers, a-and footsteps, just softer than the static.
Aodh: Calm down, the static and isolation are probably just getting to your head.
Erebus: Something is in here!!!
Aodh: Call the doctors, maybe something is going wrong in your head, or maybe a rat got in through the vents. Just call the doctors, you're starting to freak me out.
[end of conversation]

Journal log
Day 10
Have you all heard of karma? I never knew if it was real or not, probably never will. But if it is...? What did I do in my past life to justify this agony? It's cold. Always cold. I don't know how much so, not any thermometers in this prison cell, I just know that it's cold. Another thing that bothers me is the emptiness of the room. There's a toilet in the corner and a food slot in the back. benches all around me. They're hard enough to support my weight but soft enough to cushion a fall. I guess that they made it like an insane asylum. The only thing there really is to do is talk to Aodh and Erebus, along with filling my head with the horror of Clive Barker and the mysteries of Agatha Christie. As of right now, I'm in the middle of House of Leaves. I think I'll finish it now, or at least do anything to escape this torment
-Sleddog
—————————————————————————
Experiment Log: Week 2
Author: Dr. Braylon Dragich
24181 log: The subject has appeared to be facing great mental stress and hallucinations during his time in the room. This problem will be fixed by replacing the static in the room with classical piano music from composers such as Ludwig von Beethoven and Frederich Chopin. Other than that, optic and cochlear nerve function has greatly and the experiment as normal, save for an increased awareness towards his mental health.
96185 log: The subject has been again adjusting well to his surroundings, and has gotten used to the hot temperatures. He, surprisingly, is the only person here that continued with the experiment without dilemma, other than a spook coming from an interaction with Subject 24181. His room shall again be increased 10 ° F, from 90 ° to 100.
12135 log: The subject has been acclimating well to the conditions of his cell. However, he also appears to be having an increase in mental stress. Although not as great as Subject 24181, it shall be combated by a temporary shutdown to install a plexiglass window between him and Subject 96185's room. It will happen in the middle of the night, and both subjects will spend the night in specially made boxes that simulate the temperatures of their room while the construction occurs.
—————————————————————————
[The following is a transcribed conversation between
Subject 24181/Erebus and Subject 12135/Sleddog]
Subject 24181: Sleddog, are you there?
Subject 12135: Where else would I be? How's the music?
Subject 24181: I'd gladly listen to Clarinet Concerto than that cursed static. What approximately the window?
Subject 12135: Great. It's good to see another person, even if it is through 6 inches of plexiglass. Any news on your side?
Subject 24181: Surprisingly good news
Subject 12135: What?
Subject 24181: I can see
Subject 12135: They turned the lights on?
Subject 24181: No, I can see in the dark
Subject 12135: How?
Subject 24181: I don't know, maybe I just got used to it. What about you? And Aodh?
Subject 12135: Maybe... I don't know. not any thermometers in here. The same goes for Aodh, But I think it's working.

Announcement on the Beagle Experiment
Author: Dr. Braylon Dragich
When this experiment started, all it was an idea, a couple of scribbles on a piece of paper, and three toddlers raised by the fantastic caretaker, Elaine Shah. However, look where it has gone now. We have seen encouraging results from all three subjects. So, I have decided to... stray from the original plan. Next week, we will be placing the subjects in far greater conditions than in the past three weeks, to see the limit that the subjects reach until physical injuries or restraints are reached.

[The following is a transcribed conversation between Dr. Braylon Dragich and Caretaker Elaine Shah]
Dr. Braylon Dragich: Ah. Mrs. Shah. How are you?
Elaine Shah: What was that report that you last made?
Dr. Braylon Dragich: Listen. I don't like this any more than you do. But it's necessary
Elaine Shah: Torture is necessary?
Dr. Braylon Dragich: It isn't torture
Elaine Shah: Increase until physical injury is caused. Those were your own words. Why did you not check with me first?
Dr. Braylon Dragich: I knew you would never give consent. You didn't even want the experiment to begin in the first place.
Elaine Shah: It's child abuse!
Dr. Braylon Dragich: It's science
Elaine Shah: Torturing children and giving them a lethal injection at the end of it is not science. It's what deranged psychopaths get old sparky over.
Dr. Braylon Dragich: What was I supposed to do, let them leave? We can't house them here, and the OGE will have a field day over this if we let them leave.
Elaine Shah: Then why did you start something that couldn't end without three bodies in your arms?
Dr. Braylon Dragich: It needed to happen. Besides, you can't make an omelet without breaking a couple eggs.
Elaine Shah: You also can't kill these kids without me breaking your femur.
Dr. Braylon Dragich: I will complete this experiment, with or without you at my side.
Elaine Shah: [storms off]

Results of the Beagle Experiment
Author: Dr. Braylon Dragich
It is with great delight and great sorrow that the Beagle experiment has concluded as a success. 14 years of hard work, hypothetical theories, planning, critiquing, analyzing, friendship, and loss has led us to this moment of advancement and triumph. Subject 24181 can see in 99.82% darkness and hear at the same level as the average canine or feline, Subject 96185 is now able to stand up to 176 ° F for several hours, and Subject 12135 can now withstand -81 ° F for several hours as well. It is with this information that the Beagle experiment officially ends, and the subjects get prepared for extermination.

The Blackout Incident
Author: Dr. Braylon Dragich
Date of incident: December 4th, 2019, at 0219 hours All three subjects were wheeled into the operating room bound at their shoulders, wrists, and ankles with strips of full-grain leather. The order they went in was Subject 96185 on the far right, Subject 24181 in the middle, and Subject 12135 on the far left, closest to the door.
Right as the procedure was approximately to begin, Subject 96185 jumped, knocking the gurney over into Dr. [redacted]'s legs and subsequently causing him to break the syringe. The struggle caused the other Doctors to leave their posts to help Dr. [redacted]. While they were busy, Subject 12135 stole a scalpel from the desk nearby and cut free from the restraints and running out of the doors and into the air ducts.
After the doctors discovered him missing, they launched guards to search for the missing subject. They didn't check the air vents (they reached below freezing temperatures in the winter). However, Subject 12135 could handle it because of the trials he partook in during the Beagle experiment. Moving through the vents, he reached the electrical room and cut power to the entire hospital. The doctors were unable to see what they were doing back in the operating room, and that allowed Subject 24185 to steal a scalpel, cut himself free, and knock out the doctors. He then freed Subject 96181 and knocked out the rest of the doctors in the operating room. The three met up and escaped the facility by jumping out of a window. An ongoing manhunt is ensuing in the woods surrounding the facility, but I have a gut feeling that we aren't going to find them. I raised them too well.

Horrific experiment brought to light
By Wayne Newman
Friends Janie Mclaughlin and Amber Erickson were going on a cross-state road trip when they discovered three teenagers stumbling out of the road on the side of I-84. According to recorded testimony, the teenagers were wearing hospital gowns and no shoes. The two invited them into the car and drove them to the nearest hospital. Two of the teenagers had superficial frostbite on their feet and all three needed to face treatment psychological and emotional trauma. They told local authorities approximately the experiments they had been forced into and the lab it took place in, which was torn down following the experiment. They also told authorities that they had no names, but they went by the names Erebus, Aodh, and Sleddog. Following the confession, the FBI visited the hospital. There they found documents approximately the experiment and a young woman named Elaine Shah locked in a prison-like room after she had tried to free the teenagers.
The head doctor of the experiment, Dr. Braylon Dragich, was charged with four counts of false imprisonment and three counts of crimes against humanity. Subsequently, he was sentenced to death by lethal injection. His last words were, "I guess she was right, this is the kind of stuff that gets you old sparky". Mrs. Shah is currently receiving treatment for psychological trauma caused by her stay in the solitary confinement room. As for Erebus, Aodh, and Sleddog, whose names were later changed to Eric, Aiden, and Silas, they were taken in by Mrs. Shah and they were able to start public schooling. more information on the experimen on the next page.
—————————————————————————
Dear Mrs. Shah, We have absolutely loved having Eric, Aiden, and Silas at our school. When we first met them, they needed some help breaking out of their shell, perfectly understandable after what they went through. However, once that happened, the remarkable students they are have really shone through. They are exceptional students, have many friends, and have an extreme passion for the arts. I personally understand their gift, as it is their form of spreading the darkness they experienced out of them and onto something else. Eric is an absolutely talented painter whose painting, which depicted the room that he stayed in during the experiment, won first in a state art competition. Aiden has a gift for guitar and is going to play a personal piece at the end of the year ceremony. And Silas is a phenomenal writer that won a local writing contest. I wanted to let you know how they were doing just as a heads up on what an amazing parent you are. Sincerely Gayle Fields

The people here who are advocating dating a Leftist are doing the usual human thing of projecting their own desires onto the world.
You should only date, court, and marry people who are like you: same race, ethnicity, social class, life philosophy, life goals, and political alignment.
Anything else simply sews the seeds for future dissent.
I leave you with a poignant quotation from the Bhagavad-Gita:
When evil arises, the women of the family become promiscuous and thus hybrid varnas are born, leading the family lineage into the hell. The ancient dharma of the jati and progeny are destroyed. In such corrupt families, the ancestors become deprived of the offerings and oblations. Thus, men are doomed to spend an eternity in the hell.

“Life will not be contained. Life breaks free. It expands to new territories, crashes through barriers, painfully, maybe even dangerously.” Jeff Goldblum, Jurassic Park

Day 1
I was always told that my life would be substantial.

Day 10
Have you all heard of karma?

[The following is a transcribed conversation between
Subject 24181/Erebus and Subject 12135/Sleddog]
Subject 24181: Sleddog, are you there?
Subject 12135: Where else would I be? How's the music?
Subject 24181: I'd gladly listen to Clarinet Concerto than that cursed static. What approximately the window?
Subject 12135: Great. It's good to see another person, even if it is through 6 inches of plexiglass. Any news on your side?
Subject 24181: Surprisingly good news
Subject 12135: What?
Subject 24181: I can see
Subject 12135: They turned the lights on?
Subject 24181: No, I can see in the dark
Subject 12135: How?
Subject 24181: I don't know, maybe I just got used to it. What about you? And Aodh?
Subject 12135: Maybe... I don't know. not any thermometers in here. The same goes for Aodh, But I think it's working.
Subject 24181: That's good. Anyways, see ya bud
Subject 12135: See ya Erebus

“Life will not be contained. Life breaks free. It expands to new territories, crashes through barriers, painfully, maybe even dangerously.” Jeff Goldblum, Jurassic Park

Journal log
Day 1
I was always told that my life would be substantial.

Day 10
Have you all heard of karma?
-Sleddog

[The following is a transcribed conversation between
Subject 24181/Erebus and Subject 12135/Sleddog]
Subject 24181: Sleddog, are you there?
Subject 12135: Where else would I be? How's the music?
Subject 24181: I'd gladly listen to Clarinet Concerto than that cursed static. What approximately the window?
Subject 12135: Great. It's good to see another person, even if it is through 6 inches of plexiglass. Any news on your side?
Subject 24181: Surprisingly good news
Subject 12135: What?
Subject 24181: I can see
Subject 12135: They turned the lights on?
Subject 24181: No, I can see in the dark
Subject 12135: How?
Subject 24181: I don't know, maybe I just got used to it. What about you? And Aodh?
Subject 12135: Maybe... I don't know. not any thermometers in here. The same goes for Aodh, But I think it's working.
Subject 24181: That's good. Anyways, see ya bud
Subject 12135: See ya Erebus

Announcement on the Beagle Experiment
Author: Dr. Braylon Dragich
When this experiment started, all it was an idea, a couple of scribbles on a piece of paper, and three toddlers raised by the fantastic caretaker, Elaine Shah. However, look where it has gone now. We have seen encouraging results from all three subjects. So, I have decided to... stray from the original plan. Next week, we will be placing the subjects in far greater conditions than in the past three weeks, to see the limit that the subjects reach until physical injuries or restraints are reached.
—————————————————————————
Elaine Shah: [storms off]
[end of conversation]

“We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed, a few people cried. Most people were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad Gita; Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince that he should do his duty and, to impress him, takes on his multi-armed form and says, ‘Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.’”
J. Robert Oppenheimer

[The following is a transcribed conversation between Dr. Braylon Dragich and Subject 12135]
Dr. Braylon Dragich: 12135...
Subject 12135:[Sightly sobbing] Sleddog. It's what everyone calls me. Why should now be any different?
Dr. Braylon Dragich: Well, Sleddog, can you please explain to me what happened yesterday?
Subject 12135: I don't know when it was, I just know that the power went out
Dr. Braylon Dragich: So, around 3:00?
Subject 12135: Yes. Soon after the door opened and Mrs. Shah walked in. Saying that I was leaving. Aodh and Erebus were standing behind her. I thought that this was all part of the plan.
Dr. Braylon Dragich: It wasn't
Subject 12135: I know that now. I didn't question walking around in the dark. I didn't question leaving for the first time in 14 years. I only started to question it when the alarms went off. But I ran because there appeared to be no other option.
Dr. Braylon Dragich: Okay
Subject 12135: We were at the exit. Then the guards appeared out of nowhere. Could you please tell him to aim. We got multiple bullets imbedded in our arms and legs. Mrs. Shah got the worst of it though. Please tell me that she's still alive?
Dr. Braylon Dragich: Luckily she is, but right now she is in solitary confinement for the crimes she committed.
Subject 12135: Well, I guess that's better than death.
Dr. Braylon Dragich: It is
Subject 12135: When can we leave? Like, when can things go back to the way they were?
Dr. Braylon Dragich: [pauses] Soon
Subject 12135: Okay
Dr. Braylon Dragich: Thank you for your time Subject 12135: What else would I be doing [walks away]
Subject 12135: [whispers] liar.

I didn't tell him. As of now, he thinks that we don't know that he's planning on killing us. She also told us approximately the testing, but that's not important. It's gonna hurt tremendously for a long time, but if it's what's needed to escape this asylum, I'd do it ten times over.

Day 49
Violence against God, nature, or art. According to Dante's Inferno, this is what I had to have done to deserve this. I respect God. I have never seen nature. I have never brought a knife across smooth cotton and tarnished the combined swirl of oils, resins, additives, and pigment. Yet I still feel it. Heat bears down on me like a canvas, causing the air in my cage to quiver like a sheet of cloth. I know that Sled Dog isn't doing much better. I went over to the window to talk to him a bit ago, to try to distract myself from the blistering heat. He was trapped in the arctic there. He was only laying on the floor, trying to stay warmer in the endless bite of his room. If it hadn't been for the past 6 weeks, I'm sure that both of us would be dead. I'm going to stop here, I can't concentrate anymore.

—————————————————————————

Day 10
Have you all heard of karma?

—————————————————————————

—————————————————————————
This is everything that I have. That is everything I have on the Beagle experiment. Is there more? Probably, but that doesn’t matter now. For the record, this is Sleddog. You need to be careful. I looked online and I got an ad. Whatever you do, do not click on it. Do not sign up. Because it was an ad approximately a government experiment. One meant to push the boundaries of human evolution...

2020.03.06 15:52 nigh_sceen From a new age hippy to being born again in Christ — a Reformed journey

So I decided to share my path, partly because I feel it would be cathartic, and partly because I feel that it may help others who are in a similar spot.
I just wanted to say first that this subreddit is a wealth of knowledge and I have been really pleasantly surprised since finding it. I've found that Bible can actually be pretty abiblical and is overrun with disingenious atheists looking for gotcha moments.
Well, I would say around 10 years ago I hit a pretty low spot in my life. I was smoking weed habitually and compulsively (which I would continue to do), and well as using psychedelics heavily(which I would also continue), most often times alone in my room.
I have never been suicidal, and could never imagine leaving my family members with that heartache, but I would always have this nagging thought in the back of my mind that it would be okay not to be alive. I knew this was not a good thing, and I knew this was not normal, so I decided to make a drastic change. I thought of pastors and how they just seemed to have this contentment and genuine happiness. I also thought at that time that the Bible was BS, man-made, and a tool of deception. I came to the conclusion that the prophets in the Bible were inspired by something, and began to wonder what they read (if not the Bible), which lead me down a wormhole on the internet resulting in me delving in a lot of esoteric material, then Buddhism, and eventually Hinduism.
I had changed from a typical clean cut jock, to a long haired pacifist vegetarian who started calling everyone "man". I would smoke copious amounts of weed every day, and I was taking mushrooms and LSD every couple of weeks. I at least partially maintained my Christian roots and never got into the idol worship, but I was extremely interested in the philosophical aspects of Hinduism, reading the Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita daily. I was also meditating a couple hours a day, and attended a 10-day silent meditation retreat.
I was extremely curious about chakras, astral projection, and was actively trying to lucid dream every night to attain said astral projection. I would set my alarm for 4 hours, fall asleep, then wake up, meditate briefly and go back to sleep almost always resulting in lucidity.
The drug use and seeking spirituality would continue for a few years. I eventually got accepted into a program at my local community college and had to stop smoking.
I then met my wife who was and is Christian. We only briefly spoke about our religious beliefs early on, but I told her what I had believed to be true at the time — that all religions ultimately teach the same thing, that God is God, and every body has different understandings of Him, but He is still the same regardless, to which she politely disagreed. We had dated for a while, and I asked her if she would mind if I went with her sometime(she only really went occasionally at this time), which she was agreeable to. We would go pretty sporadically, maybe going two weekends in a row, then maybe 2 months later going again, but I really enjoyed it and I really liked the pastor. My interest in the things that I spoke about previously began to wane, or, at the very least, I wasn't doing them as often.
This part is an aside, and could maybe be unrelated, but I definitely think it meant something, and is part of me trying to decide if I am a cessationist or not. I had a dream when we were trying to get pregnant, and in the dream she told me "the baby will be here in november", and woke her up and told her and she laughed and fell back asleep. Well, a few weeks later we found out she was pregnant, and a several months later the baby was indeed here in November.
Any way, I was finishing up school and had the desire to read a book, any book, that was not school related. I had decided to read Bible cover to cover because 1. I know maybe 1-2 people who have, and 2. So I know what is in there for myself. Well, I began in the OT and as I read further it spoke louder and louder to me. It showed me the error in my ways and how foolish I was. How I had made God in my own image, and reinforced it through my self gratifying behavior. I would split my time between OT and NT, and I had would can only be described as a renewal of my mind. That I was born again.
It wasn't an all at once thing, but a progressive loudening of the voice in the back of my mind. Of my conscience.
I hadn't mentioned it, but I was also addicted to porn. It was such a part of my day I would find myself browsing those websites just out of boredom during lulls in my day. I began to notice I would get this sort of anxiety as soon as the temptation would creep in. My heart would start pounding and I knew what I was planning on doing was wrong. I gave in. A few times. But afterwards I had this feeling of despair and a depth of disappointment I cannot explain. I prayed to God, to Christ, for help. I told Him that I cannot do it alone and I needed Him.
Since then I have not watched porn, and, in the beginning I would still have the itch, the thought no longer crosses my mind.
I feel as though my path back to Christ really exemplifies being saved by grace through faith. If you were to say to me a couple years ago that you had a relationship with Christ, or knew Christ I would probably have rolled my eyes and laughed to myself. Nothing sounded more absurd. My faith is not of my own accord. It was a gift from God, not one that I sought and not one that I had even truly wanted at the time, and for that I am thankful.
I apologise if that was long winded. Believe it or not I left a good bit out. If anyone has any questions or comments, I'm an open book.
Have a blessed day.

2020.01.23 21:42 ConfusedEnoch Krishna and Christ (Part 3 of "Vedic texts and their similarities with other religious books")

Here are the links for Part 1 and Part 2 of this series.
As I have explained before, my objective is not to proselytize the syncretic "faith", but to make people aware of some of the stunning similarities between supposedly distant religious traditions.
We studied the similitudes between Judaism and Hinduism in the last two posts, thus bringing us to the more recent religion of Christianity.
As you all know, the central tenet of Christianity is the belief in Jesus as the Son of God and the Messiah (Christ). Christians believe that Jesus, as the Messiah, was anointed by God as savior of humanity and hold that Jesus' coming was the fulfillment of messianic prophecies of the Old Testament.
On the other hand, according to Hindu mythology, Krishna was born on earth so that the balance of good in the world could be restored.
Krishna and Jesus were both saviors of mankind and avatars of God who have returned to earth at an especially critical time in the lives of their people. They were the incarnates of the Divine Being in human form to teach human beings divine love, divine power, divine wisdom, and lead the benighted world towards the light of God.
The word Krishna first appeared in one of the earliest Vedic books, the Bhagavad Gita (dated ~1000 BC), which means that he's been here for a very long time.
Now, similarities in just the names of 'Christ' and 'Krishna' have enough fuel for the curious mind to prod into the proposition that they were indeed connected, especially when you consider the fact that Jesus Christ was originally ordinarily named "Jesus", "Yeshua" in Hebrew or "Issa" in Arabic.
It wasn't until after his lost years that he was "baptized" and henceforth called Christ. Surprisingly, the word Christ comes from the Ancient Greek word "Christos" which means "anointed".
We also know that the Ancient Greek had an extremely broad trading network and were involved in various exchanges with the Indus valley people, including the Hindus who apparently also ended up living with the Greeks and fused their religions in what is now called Greco-Hinduism which first appeared between the 2nd century BC and the 1st century AD.
I don't think it would be unreasonable to assume that some of the appellations of enlightened/"cleansed" individuals would be transferred between those two civilizations.
Etymology of the greek word Χριστός (Kristos) shows that it comes from χρῑ́ω (khrī́ō, “to rub, ceremonially anoint”) and is a cognate with Sanskrit घृत (ghṛta).
Now that I've gotten the phonetical similitudes out of the way, let's explore the stories of both of those divine beings:

I sincerely hope I am not criticized for this comparison.
I just want to add one more thing, there is a book called "Life of Saint Issa" that talks about how during his teenage and young adult years, Jesus Christ went to the Indian subcontinent and became acquainted with the ways of the Hindus, learning all kinds of meditation/healing traditions, including the Chrism oil which he used to heal/anoint those individuals.

2020.01.04 14:11 KlutzyAirport What is the most likely age of the Gita??

For a long time, I had the opinion that the Gita was at least 3000 years old. However, recently reading Devdutt Pattanaik's Gita analysis, simply titled "My Gita", I was astounded to learn that it was apparently penned only in 300BCE , making it younger than Buddhism ?? I first thought Devdutt was simply bluffing and deliberately messing up the dates so that it fits conveniently into his narrative that the Gita's advocacy of action over renunciation was an attempt by Hinduism to curb down on then popular Buddhist ideals of people taking up a monastic life to escape suffering.
However,if you google Gita age, you are led directly to https://www.ancient.eu/Bhagavad_Gita/ which puts the Gita's age at 300 BCE as well. What on earth is going on?? Or did Pattanaik simply take this article itself as source for his claims about the Gita's age ?

If you do have references to notable scholarly work that objectively presents an estimate, do share the links in the comment thread. Thank you !!

2019.12.22 15:28 invenereveritas Is this lovebombing and should he be tossed?

Hi ladies! This sub has changed my life for the better and I guess I'm out in the field practicing strategy.
I met this guy at a bar at 4am two weeks ago. As FDS would correctly say, I probably fucked up the first impression because I was pretty drunk and we got along very well, therefore we made out a bit before I went home.
We've been texting for two weeks and he seems very loving. He wanted to invite me to a friends party the first weekend after we met but I cancelled. I agreed to go to a second party 2 weeks after we met.
The days leading up to it he would mention he's excited to see me. (I was excited to go to that party for other reasons- I like parties.) We've been friendly and over text he would mention he spoils people he's dating. He even asked how he should introduce me to his friends, if he should say I'm his girlfriend. I told him considering we met only once that he should introduce me as my name lol.
At the party he brought me two presents and was eager to get me the party favors he knew I was excited for. He spent a lot of time holding me close, telling me how beautiful I am, how beautiful my eyes were, blah blah blah. "No, I don't think you understand, you are SO beautiful."
I like to have a lot of intellectual discussions and one of the presents he got me was a copy of a book that I had mentioned I wanted, the Bhagavad Gita.
It really bothered me that the entire night he didn't mention that I was smart. I'm not trying to toot my own horn but I do feel like that's my most obvious trait that really stands out and does deserve complementing. I am very smart. I think even people who don't like me are compelled to admit that.
I don't really give a shit if I'm beautiful but I do care about brains.
He was a philosophy major so I found it odd that he didn't acknowledge my intelligence at all. I almost want to text him and confront him about this, because it's important to me. If you're praising me on my beauty alone, thats very odd to me. I'm attractive but I think my mind is more important and more obvious. I'm totally more attracted to people for their brains than their looks and tend to date uglier guys because of it. I crave that intellectual stimulation more than anything.
He also spent a tremendous amount of time kissing me or trying to kiss me and he didn't care if his friends were around. I was often pulling away embarrassed and telling him "dude your friends are around" but he really didn't care.
Later he was telling me that he was asking his friends about me and that they liked me, and he asked if I liked his friends. I felt suspicious of this.
I also felt suspicious when we had a conversation where he was saying he really liked me. He said that he can read people really well and knows if they'll get along. I asked what can you read from me? He looked into my eyes for a long time and said something like you haven't been in many relationships before. I asked why he would say that and he said because you're afraid to love.
This isn't true. I've been in the dating scene since I was a tween lol. Obviously I'm not throwing myself into a relationship with the first guy who says he likes me. I told him that was bullshit lol.
Tl:dr: I probably know the correct answer here but I wanted to get your takes on this. I'm probably giving off all the totally wrong vibes because I made out with him so much last night. He was always trying to cuddle and hold hands. He's probably just love bombing.
I started to leave without having a preparatory conversation beforehand and he seemed really flustered and maybe slightly upset but he didn't confront me, he did walk me down and stuff.
He asked me something along the lines of did you really think I wouldn't want to say a proper goodbye and walk you down? and I said "I wasn't really thinking about it." LMAO.
He really insisted on getting kisses before I got in my uber even though I tried to use the excuse of cotton mouthing for not wanting to kiss.
Anyway I'm not super emotionally invested in this guy and he's not super handsome necessarily. But the party was fun, his friend group is really fascinating, and I would not mind hanging out with them all again, if I could not have to be kissing this man in front of countless others all night long.
So tell me sisters, am I a dumb bitch? Is this guy trying to use me? Should I confront him about not praising my brains? ( I do want to haha). Is it cool if I let him take me out to dinner and maybe another party?
—-
Edit: He asked me if he was the kind of guy I’d want to introduce to my family and I said I dont really know you well enough to know yet. I asked him that same question back and he said “yes thats why im asking you.” Thoughts?

2019.12.15 02:45 one1ess Witnessing to JWs: Why the Bible is Not God's Word

For those of you finding yourself in an argument about whether JWs are the one true religion, either with family, friends or (not recommended) elders, I've found that disproving the religion still leaves shaky grounds, the conversation often reaches the point of "yes, this is bad, but I'll stick with this religion because where else would I go bla-bla-bla." I want to share the speediest route I've found to making the point, which is to question the foundation below that level, the Bible itself. This is all based on real experience and real conversations.
The most powerful question to use, when unraveling irrational thinking, is "How do you know that?".
JW: JW is the only true religion.
You: How do you know that?
JW: The Bible helps us identify the true religion.
You: Why do you trust the Bible? Quran will help you identify Islam as the only true religion, for instance.
JW: Because it's God's word.
You: How do you know that?
Now here's where the conversation is branching into several different paths. All of them lead to the realization they have no good reasons to believe any of that. Go through their points one by one, finish one point and then ask "ok, do you have anything else or that's it?"
Oh there's so many things that are proving it!..
"Ok, what's your best one? Let's pick one specific proof"
Come on, we both know all of them, we're sharing them in the ministry all the time
"Then it shouldn't be difficult to just pick one, especially if we do it so often. What's your best one that convinces you the most?"
Because the Bible says so (2 Tim 3:16 etc.)
This is the easiest one to disprove. "Other holy books, like Quran, and Bhagavad Gita, and the Book of Mormon claim they're inspired too, but you don't just trust them at their word, do you? This is not evidence. Even TMS book says you shouldn't prove Bible with Bible to someone who doesn't consider it an authority. And to someone that considers it an authority, there is no need to convince them, so this argument is useless."
It's the most widespread book on the planet, a bestseller of all times
"Imagine a universe without God. In that world, there must be some book which tops all the others, Top 1. Would you immediately reach a conclusion that God must have written it? When there's no God in that universe? As you can see, a book being the bestseller does not mean its origin is divine."
It changes people's lives.
"Tony Robbins' books and seminars also change people's lives, but you don't claim he's inspired by God, do you? It doesn't work like that. Also, it doesn't change everyone's lives, does it? Not that many people become JW, in fact, only a small minority. You say some people stop smoking and taking drugs because of a miraculous intervention after their prayers, however, you probably know of people who couldn't stop and never became a JW."
"Well this depends on the person as well, they must put up a fight."
"If it depends on the person anyway, and works in some cases and doesn't work in others, where's the miraculous intervention in that?"
It's harmonious and doesn't contradict itself, despite multiple authors
This point is hilarious, because leaving aside the fact that internal consistency can not prove divine origin in any way (there are sci-fi stories that are internally consistent, are they also God-inspired?), but when you research it, it does actually contradict itself so much and so often. Pick the best ones out of hundreds of contradictions http://bibviz.com/ and go with it. Don't pick the weak points, especially doctrine-related, like "how could some people see God if no one can see God and live", it can be explained away by "they saw an angel" for example. Better point out historical contradictions. One of the most important Bible stories is the resurrection of Jesus, and every author has its different version of events at this major point: Matt 28:2; Mark 16:5; Luke 24:4; John 20:12 - ask them about the number of people in the empty tomb and their location. The answers according to the Bible are 1) an angel rolled back a stone and sat on it outside, 2) a young man was sitting inside, 3) no one inside and then two men appeared standing beside them, and 4) two angels were sitting in different places inside. Ask them who's right, which version is true, what did actually happen? Would this be accepted as a reliable testimony in a court of law if witnesses were contradicting themselves so much when relating such important events? The most hilarious ones for me is when a contradiction is in the same book, like when Luke can't decide whether Paul's companions heard the voice/saw the light (Acts 9:7; 22:9, better in NWT because the verb is "hear" not "understand").
Possible objection: "Yes, but those people were imperfect with imperfect memories, and they were trying to write each from their point of view". Answer: "I get that, however, it shows that there are clear contradictions, which means you don't get to use the 'harmonious' argument in favor of the Bible being inspired by God anymore, as it clearly contradicts itself at times. So let's put this one aside and pick another proof. Got anything else?"
It's scientifically accurate and has impressive knowledge for an ancient book
"Can you give an example?"
Prophecies
Ah, the prophecies. Before even discussing them, it would be wise to teach the person what the 'argument from ignorance' fallacy means. Whenever you hear a phrase like 'Well, what else could it be?', you've probably encountered this fallacy right there. So, let's imagine that we have found some predictions from the past that came true. How do we get from there to 'there must be an all-powerful being in the Universe that predicted it'? Why do we rule out other possible explanations, like, I don't know, time travel? Or a coincidence, just being lucky? Or any number of other possible explanations? Time travel is not really an outrageous alternative, given that the main theory is an all-powerful God that knows the future and decided to share this knowledge with one nation to prove he's God. Now that we've covered that even given miraculous predictions, we wouldn't have been able to establish the cause and rule out everything else, let's look at the prophecies themselves.
Make sure to hammer down on each point, and at the end of each one repeatedly highlight the lack of any foundation: 'So, this one is out of the way too, do you have anything else that proves the Bible is God's word? Because I really want to believe and alleviate my doubts, but it's hardly my fault that the points are just so weak. How can I have the rest of my life dedicated to something on such shaky grounds? How can I preach about the Bible being God's Word when my conscience says it's dishonest and hypocritical to preach something to others while not being 100% convinced in it yourself?'
You might feel like it's futile and pointless to debate JWs, however, remember that you were one of them at some point, and then something changed your mind. Same applies to them. We struggle with false beliefs partly because we haven't encountered the right counterarguments. When exposed to them, being explained in a way that is understandable, there's no other move for a rational human being but to accept the conclusions, even if it takes a long time.
Recommended sources: when it comes to debating JW religion, almost nothing beats jwfacts.com, but when it comes to the Bible, logical fallacies and rational thinking, this is what I would personally recommend: https://rationalwiki.org/, https://skepticsannotatedbible.com/, Atheist Experience Youtube channel (like this amusing call from a JW), and Atheist Debates series with the refutation of the most common arguments for the existence of God and the divine inspiration of the Bible.

2019.12.09 02:49 taiji_lou Gaudiya Sampradaya is not ISKCON.

Brothers,
Salutations to the devotees. Salutations to the Brahmacharis. Salutations to sannyasins and renunciates of iskcon. The purpose of this letter this to address certain teachings which have been disseminated within iskcon Krishna temples which are not harmonious with teachings found in srimad bhagavatam, the teachings of Sri Krishna chaitanya mahaprabhu, or in the Bhagavad Gita. I will be clear, brief, and will include scriptural references.
The first pressing issue is incorrect chanting. When chanting the Maha mantra please use a very soft but strong and clear tone while smiling. A soft and strong voice with a smile holds krishna's name in preciousness. Also brothers, please chant more slowly.
The next issue is why we chant. The Kali Santarana upanishad explains how Brahma instructed Narada that the maha-mantra is the best way to overcome the effects of the age of Kali. Age of Kali is marked by strife and many many problems for devotees. the mantra removes these obstacles and allows devotee to transcend his condition, but it is prescribed that Vaishnavas practice Kundalini yoga as adjunctive meditation and is an extremely important aspect of our culture as vaishnavas. Thus, it is very important not to warn devotees away from traditional meditation and Kundalini practices as it is clearly prescribed by the sages as written by VyasaDeva.
Though Shri Krishna chaitanya mahaprabhu found patanjali to be a fantastical analysis and not concise, a brahmacharya of keen wit should find close parallels between the teachings found in the second chapter of the second Canto verse 18 through 23 of srimad bhagavatam and patanjali's yoga. Thus, a good reader will find that the teachings of gaudiya vaishnavism and the teachings found in yoga are all but synonymous. The difference is the perspective of a devotee versus a yogi. It is a nuanced matter of perspective, to be a mayavadi, or personalist, or an impersonalist. Or adversely, to believe in a dvaitic perspective, although the idea of Krishna Purusha and his radiant prakriti being two entirely different phenomena date back to the 13th century and the teachings of Madhvacharya, which are entirely different from Shri Krishna Chaitanya's 16th century reformist achintya beda abheda, which in many respects is very much like Ramanuja's personalist monism, which is markedly different from Shankara.
in fact, we often use the spark and flame analogy to describe our relationship to Brahman. This is not harmonious with the teachings of Sri Krishna chaitanya mahaprabhu, this comes from the 13th century and is a teaching of madhvacharya. Please research the term achintya beda abheda. The heated debate between gaudiya vaishnava and my Mayavadi philosophers actually has to do with our analysis of Shankar's impersonalism, not whether or not the godhead and the devotee are inconceivably the same and yet different. The difference has to do with Krishna chaitanya analysis of mundane material energy being a covering of a more subtle spiritual energy, which would make a science student perhaps interested in the higgs boson particle. If you're not familiar with the higgs boson particle please look it up. it is this understanding of the material covering which leads us to a nuanced analysis of the transcendental body of Godhead, which is described in the first chapter of the second Canto of the srimad bhagavatam. It is an extremely nuanced and abstract description of how electrobioplasmic informatics integrate true the dynamic of the sounds of mantra with a grosser, frozen material covering. It is frozen because the subatomic particles condensed together, and when liberated tapas is expressed through heat and the liberation of prana. This is taught in yoga, and I have now explain how these two perspectives are integrated.
my fellows, there are a great many things besides this which need to be addressed but these are two very simple very basic things that we can begin to familiarize ourselves with as Brahmacharis.
More to come, lads.
Om namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya.

2019.11.20 01:03 Ecleptomania What is passion and how do you find it?

So, like many of my posts in the Order this one is prompted by a DM I got from another Sith, this one was the first one I got from a member from the Discord though and I wrote a very long answer to the one who wrote me. As always I'll not share in my text who this member is if they want to keep their anonymity but I felt like the things I wrote could help others too. Many of my posts are like the discussions between Plato and Aristotle simply because I write things the best when I write to someone as opposed to writing for myself.
This was written to me: I am in need for some insight. Passion for us Sith is fundamental, but I am struggling to understand what passion truly is. Therefore I am doubting what my passion is and more importantly how I find my passion.
What follows now is an edited version of my answer to this user so that it might be of use to other members of the Order. These are my thought on passion and how to find it and I hope that others might agree with me (and if not, please share your own thoughts and feelings on the matter). I will make certain sections BOLD and the following section in ITALICS. This will signify that these are added parts to the original text. So if you want to read the original text, just skip anything that are in Italics as these weren't part of my original message to the user.
----- Passion is one of the fundaments of the Sith, but I'd also say that Sith or not passion is essential for living for without it many lose their way, not knowing what to do with their lives. Passion could be defined as whatever drives you to strive for a better life, something that will give you pleasure and relaxation at the same time. Finding what might bring that to one self can be very hard though as many people have been taught not to give in to passion and to put it aside and to instead live for others. This is a big problem in society as a whole, most people learn that they have to deny themselves, who they are, what they want, who they can love and more, these people aren't free but rather trapped in the bondage of society or the concepts of what is right and wrong from other peoples point of view.
A great part of my life I denied myself what I thought would be good for me but might make others feel uncomfortable or unhappy. I lived my life for others and not myself so I understand what you're saying. Many of us believe that passion has to be linked to "passionate" things, like sex, drugs, dating, pornography and much more things that we've learned from others may be things like Lust, Envy or other so called sins. I don't subscribe to that definition of passion, rather passion to me is doing something that elevates your daily life and that makes you feel good. I think it's detrimental for people to have the wrong definition of what passion is, specially when passion seen through the eyes of say the Catholic church can many times be likened to the deadly sins or having so-called sinfull thoughts. If sinfull thinking was passion, then the whole world would be run by passionate people because we are all sinners in some sense.
I am very passionate in the true sense, in writing. I play table-top roleplaying games with a group that I've been playing with for almost 15 years now, this is my hobby, my passion. I design and draw all the maps, I write characters for my players to interact with and I gather my friends at least two times a month so we can all sit down together and do something we love.
And that is the key word Love, if you love what you do you'll also be passionate in pursuing any opportunity to do what you love doing. So passion could be a small thing such as having a hobby that gives you a reason to have a good time with your friends. Passion could be spending hours listening to new music trying to find that perfect song or guitar-riff that gives you goosebumps.
Another of my great passions is helping others, that is one of the reasons why I'm so invested in the Sith Order. It gives me great pleasure to be able to know that I've helped others with things small or large. I've known lots of people who try their best to have a good life but end up destroying themselves in their quest for "something" without knowing what they are looking for. If you simply believe that passion is based on emotions then you are on the wrong track and fail to grasp what passion is.
Think of passion as happiness, you can't FIND happiness, happiness is a state of mind, when you are relaxed and to use a Jedi term, when you are at peace. As we know from our teachings, Peace is a lie there is only passion, and this to me is a great insight into what peace actually is in it's true sense. The word peace is used both in the Jedi Code and Sith Code in a way that makes it become lost in translation to people that doesn't have English as their primary language. As an example, peace is Swedish could be translated into "not war" but also as "relaxed", "calm", "tranquil", "serene" and as "free" depending on the context. So as a Swede I COULD read the first part of the Sith Code, peace is a lie, there is only passion, as "there is no freedom, only passion" making it have a totally different meaning since that would signify that Sith follow their passion and aren't free but rather trapped by their own desires.
The Jedi code teach that: "There is no emotion, there is peace." and this is where their philosophy breaks down, at least in my eyes. Because without emotions there can't be any peace, peace isn't about feeling nothing, that would rather be defined as apathy or maybe even psychopathy...
If one were to modify the first tenet of the Sith Code, you could see it in this fashion; "The Jedi Peace is a lie, there is only passion." Passion is feelings and your own actions. Passion is something that relaxes you, drives you, forces you to strive and what brings you pleasure as well as relaxation, true peace (not the Jedi definition) could be defined as having a calm mind, a mind where you are in control of your feelings rather than supressing them. It could also be a very agitated mind, filled with rage, envy, lust and other so-called dark feelings, but if that is so, you still need to be the one taking control of those emotions, making them help you rather than letting them destroy you.
I feel at peace, thanks to my passions. But denying my passion, my feelings, my anger, my hate, rather than accepting them and using them to further my ambitions, projects and getting what I want just gives me great anxiety which then paralyzes me. I am happy when I'm able to do what I like doing, when I get to do research for many hours way past my bed time and I've stayed up until the sun goes up just because I wanted to find out more about ancient Egypt. This is just a given example, my point is that when I follow my passions, my feelings and let them guide me I can truly do whatever I want without feeling guilt or letting massive influxes of emotions cloud my judgement, rather I can use them to my favor. Think of any charismatic leader alive or dead, who invoked his own emotions to give great speaches, to light fire inside others to help them take hold of that anger to change society for the better. A general invoking his own fear and the fear of his soldiers to bring them to fight harder than they've ever done in their life, rather than giving in to despair.
But finding what your passion is, can be very hard and for those that are without passion finding it again could be a struggle that can destroy you. Look at me for example, I tried to find some kind of passion in life through drugs, I was a drug addict for over seven years, consuming vast amounts of drugs on a daily basis just to be able to cope with existence. I was lost, without passion in my daily life and only had small pockets of time where I felt that I could dedicate myself to my passions. But most of my days I thought I was living a life "filled with passion" escaping reality with drugs, alcohol and kinky sexual things, but I realized that what I was truly looking for at that time wasn't passion, rather I looked for happiness (or true peace, not the Jedi concept of peace though). As already explained, happiness is a state of mind, but don't let yourself believe that you can't be happy and angry at the same time. I've had situations in my life where I thought my anger would destroy me and where I turned that anger into great achievments that gave me immense happiness and what I call true peace, even though I was still filled with a wrath that could slay a god.
I wasn't happy with the life I led, it destroyed relationships with my exes, my family and it made me reject the very idea of taking care of myself, because I thought I was living life to the fullest, giving into passion, pleasure, carnal and narcotics. It wasn't until I realized that I LACKED passion and that I was just as trapped as the Jedi with their quest for peace, harmony, serenity and knowledge... When I realized that I started to making changes into my daily life, finding my passion again, in the small things. I read a lot, you could almost call it studying instead of reading, during the past years I've read most of the worlds holy scriptures, the Quran, the Bhagavad-Gita, Daoism, Zen Buddhism, mostly looking for insight into how others have lives their lives in the years before me. It's been a great passion for me, because it set me on a path to find "the one and only truth" (which I now feel that I've done, but that is another story).
The main thing I think is that you have to ask yourself, is what drives you, what are the things (or the one thing) that gives you pleasure, but that doesn't drag you down with it. As a Sith we are the ones in controll of our feelings not the other way around. Sure you can feel anger, hate, love, happiness, but you choose to use whichever emotion you think is right for you rather than letting all the feelings have their way, chose which feeling gives you more power, or control over the situation.
Find what drives you in your daily life, it might be sharing happy stories with your family, it might be running through the forest at the break of dawn and it could be devoting yourself to learning a new language, it doesn't really matter what it is as long as you can use your feelings, your emotions, your passios while doing it.
-----
May the force help all of you to gain the insight you need to find your passions. Keep the discussion flowing both here and on the Discord server
Thank you all for reading, I hope it was insightful.

2019.10.20 04:26 Athelric For the people on this sub who support Tulsi Gabbard, I’d like to draw attention to the fact that Tulsi is literally in a cult

Sorry if this is like bad vibes or anything, I don’t mean to send that out in the universe. But it’s something that people who support her need to be informed of.
I think Marianne made a big mistake in supporting Tulsi’s tweet and backing her up. I’m a bit disappointed in her for doing so; I think she backed up Tulsi because Marianne similarly feels she was attacked by the media the moment she announced her candidacy and has had to correct false, disparaging stories about her.
So I can see where she would feel sympathy for Tulsi. But I hope Marianne comes to her senses and respectfully rescinds her support in light of the growing evidence against Tulsi.
https://nymag.com/intelligence2019/06/tulsi-gabbard-2020-presidential-campaign.html
Here’s a story on Tulsi's childhood. She was born into a cult called the Science of Identity. To date she has not left it; instead, she remains an active member and much of her campaign staff are drawn from the cult and the most important positions are staffed by the highest echelon of cult members.
It was created in the 1970's and is led by a white man named Chris Butler, but he calls himself Jagad Guru Siddhaswarupananda Paramahamsa. Tulsi's own aunt, Sina, has come forward and called it the “alt-right of the Hare Krishna movement”. Here are some excerpts from the article:
They hadn’t yet sat down to eat, Sina remembers, when Mike announced that his wife and boys would not be able to eat most of what his mother had cooked, as they were now vegetarian. Also, everyone needed to stop calling the children by their birth names. Their new names were Bhakti, Jai, and Naryana.
When Sina next visited Mike and Carol’s house, there was nothing on the walls but pictures of the immediate family and portraits of Chris Butler, a 30-something, tan, sandy-haired Caucasian, an aging beach boy in leis and white linen. Altars to him had sprung up in every room. The children’s lives were filed with ecstatic chanting, prayer, and beach gatherings exclusive to Butler devotees. Sina, who studied Eastern religions and spirituality and taught from the Bhagavad Gita, tried to be open-minded about the fact that they were, in her words, “bowing and prostrating to this white surfer guy — it was bizarre.” It was her Buddhist training to which she appealed in order to remain calm about her nephews attending Butler-focused schools and associating only with children whose parents were in the group, members of what she would come to see as the “alt-right of the Hare Krishna movement.”
Abraham has known Tulsi since childhood, when they both appeared at gatherings presided over by Chris Butler. He proposed five years ago on a surfboard. Also accompanying her to Iowa is a quiet, mustachioed campaign worker named Sunil Khemaney; he gives me his card, which is branded with the campaign’s logo, but where a job title would typically go is empty white space. He runs a business owned by Chris Butler’s wife, and former members of the sect say he is Butler’s right-hand man.
When Tulsi talks about her girlhood, it is with a profound vagueness, a visible discomfort. In Iowa, there is awkward silence when I ask about her three brothers (“They’re kind of separate,” her sister eventually says) and silence when I ask about being homeschooled (“The schools in Hawaii weren’t very good,” Davan offers). Tulsi calls herself Hindu, the first Hindu member of Congress, in fact, though the group in which she appears to have grown up does not identify as Hindu. She says she was raised by “an eccentric Catholic father.”
In 1970, the Honolulu Advertiser published a piece called “One Man Rules Haiku Krishnaites,” with the subhead “Absolute power of devotees.” In the photo beside the piece, Butler is seated shirtless and smoking, hair skimming his shoulders and a sarong around his waist, staring alluringly into the distance, a mischievous smile on his face. It is the expression of less a guru than a playboy, and this is how Advertiser reporter Janice Wolf depicts him, a handsome dictator with the ability to hypnotize the two dozen 18-to-22-year-olds who live with him in his Quonset hut. One of the girls, an 18-year-old who also happened to have the Sanskrit name Tulsi, says he arranged her marriage to another member of the group. She and another girl, who say they would kill for him, describe his teachings. Among them: “Flowers scream when they’re picked. So do trees when they’re trimmed.” (“Tulsi and Boni were sitting on the lawn chewing blades of grass when they said this,” notes Wolf.)
Butler taught vegetarianism, sexual conservatism, mind-body dualism, and disinterest in the material world. He taught a virulent homophobia, skepticism of science, and the dangers of public schools. He had been associated with Hare Krishna, and in fact claimed to have been given his Sanskrit name, Siddhaswarupananda Paramahamsa, by the founder of the Hare Krishna movement, but by the time he encountered the Gabbards, he’d started his own group. His teachings revolved around worship of Krishna but differed from those of Hare Krishna, in that he instructed his followers to learn from only a single guru — himself — and did not require them to shave their heads or wear robes. The lack of formal dress allowed the group an anonymity he encouraged. He forbade them from visiting India, which is not typical of Hare Krishna, and, also against Hare Krishna practice, married. His wife was one of his followers, Wai Lana, a popular yoga instructor who later had a long-running instructional yoga series on public television. (Abraham, Tulsi’s husband, has helped with filming Wai Lana’s videos; his mother also works for her.) Whenever Butler traveled, he’d have the homes he stayed in lined with tinfoil, to protect against electromagnetic radiation.
Butler’s group, called Science of Identity, has had political ambitions at least since 1976, when its members formed a political party called Independents for Godly Government and ran a number of candidates in local races. They kept their association with Butler under wraps until, in 1977, the Honolulu Advertiser published a three-part series headlined “The Secret Spiritual Base of a New Political Force.” A party chair, Bill Penaroza, is the father of Tulsi Gabbard’s current chief of staff, Kainoa Penaroza. Kainoa had no political experience prior to being hired by Tulsi at age 30. He was managing one of the group’s health-food stores. Former members of the Science of Identity say that Butler has always craved legitimacy for his group among mainstream Hindus, and that he has come closest to achieving this through Tulsi Gabbard’s relationship to Narendra Modi.
For many years in Kailua, the Gabbards’ known involvement with the Science of Identity went largely unremarked upon. It took an outsider, a 45-year-old special-education teacher and independent journalist Christine Gralow, who moved to the island just three years ago, to get curious enough to start asking questions. She mapped a web of relationships among devotees. “I had no idea,” she told me, “that this was going to lead me to Tulsi Gabbard.”
Soon after, she attended a town hall run by Tulsi. It was alarming for her to recognize so many faces from her research, and the whole production felt oddly staged. Gralow asked some questions about Syria, to boos from the crowd, and held up her notebook in protest. She interviewed anyone in the community who would talk and published it all on her website, meanwhileinhawaii.org, which is when the DDOS attacks started. She says, undaunted, that she has seen members of the group waiting outside her home, taking pictures. “I’m a special-ed teacher,” she says, “and special-ed teachers don’t like bullies.”
Tulsi Gabbard’s response to questions about the Science of Identity frequently begin with accusations of religious bigotry and “Hinduphobia.” Her campaign website once mentioned her years in the Philippines, but that reference has been removed. When The New Yorker asked her if she had a spiritual teacher, she said she had had “many different spiritual teachers,” that none was more important than the others, and that she has never heard Chris Butler say an unkind thing. (“I don’t even know what to say about that,” says Ian Koviak.) The campaign’s position is that any serious inquiry into Tulsi’s religious background constitutes a Hinduphobic line of attack to which other candidates would not be subject, though again, Butler’s group does not identify as Hindu.
I knew nearly nothing of Tulsi’s backstory when I found myself in her car back in February, and so in April, when she returned to Iowa City, I arranged for a follow-up conversation at a vegan restaurant. On the day before the interview, a staffer texted me to ask about the gist of my questions. The morning of, I was told that the interview was canceled. I then reached out to another staffer, who eventually said Tulsi would take questions on religious matters via email, at which point I sent a series of questions regarding Chris Butler, the Science of Identity, the beach gatherings to which Greg Martin had referred, her time in the Philippines, and when, precisely, Tulsi began to identify as Hindu. Tulsi replied with an email that declined to mention Hinduism, Butler, the Science of Identity, the gatherings, or the Philippines. “My ‘religion,’ ” she wrote, “is my loving relationship with God, and the motivation that springs from that relationship to try my best to use my life in the service of humanity and the planet.”
But as late as 2015, in a video still up on YouTube, Tulsi publicly acknowledged her guru-dev to be Siddhaswarupananda Paramahamsa, Chris Butler.
No one I spoke to with personal experience of the group, including Tulsi’s aunt, thought it possible that Tulsi Gabbard had somehow left Chris Butler’s sphere of influence, that her thirst for world peace and her persistent concerns about Islam were positions held independent of his counsel. “I don’t think that she is a bad person or in any way malicious,” says Koviak. “Butler’s agenda from way back in the ’70s has always been to have a political hold in some way. Now he has realized his dream through Tulsi Gabbard.” Says Rama Ranson, who maintains the blog RamaRansonvsthecult.com, “Her success is Butler’s success.”

THE SONG OF GOD Bhagavad-Gita Translated by Swami Prabhavananda and Christopher Isherwood Introduction by Aldous Huxley Gita and Mahabharata —————————————————————— THE MAHABHARATA is said to be the longest poem in the world. In its original form, it consisted of twenty- four thousand verses, and it grew to about one hundred thousand. Like the Old Testament, it is not a homogeneous work, but a collection of narratives. Its central theme, as the name indicates, is the story of the descendants of King Bharata (Maha means great), and of ancient India, the land where the Bharatas lived and ruled. After the death of King Pandu, the Mahabharata tells us, his brother Dhritarashtra succeeded to the throne. Dhritarashtra educated the five sons of Pan- du, the Pandavas, along with his own one hundred sons. As they grew to be men, the Pandavas distin- guished themselves by their piety and heroic virtues. In consequence, Duryodhana, Dhritarashtra's eldest son, became jealous and planned to murder them. Duryodhana's scheme was to build a palace in a distant town, and invite the Pandavas to stay there during a religious festival. The palace was made of specially inflammable materials, so that Duryo- dhana's servants could easily set it on fire. It burned to ashes, but the Pandavas and Kunti, their mother, had been warned in time, and escaped. Duryodhana believed them dead. The Panadavas lived in the forest, disguised as Brahmins, meeting all kinds of dangers and adven- tures. One day they heard that a neighboring king was to choose a husband for his daughter. The win- ner must bend a bow of enormous strength and hit a tiny target. The Pandavas thought they would try. They went to the city in their disguise. Suitors had gathered from all over India, Duryo- dhana among them. One after another, they failed in the test. At last Arjuna, the third of the Pandavas stood up, bent the bow and hit the target with the greatest ease. Draupadi, the princess, threw him the victor's garland. But the assembled princes could not accept this humiliation at the hands of a seemingly poor and unwarlike Brahmin. There would have been a fight——just as in the story of Ulysses——if Krishna, who was present, had not intervened and persuaded them that Arjuna had a right to his bride. Krishna was a cousin of the Pandavas, but he was not one of Dhritarashtra's sons. The brother took Draupadi back to the forest, where Kunti was awaiting them. 'Mother,' they cried, 'we have brought home a wonderful treasure!' 'Be sure to share it equally, my children,' Kunti answered; then she saw the girl, and exclaimed in dismay: 'Oh, what have I said!' But it was too late. Her word was sacred to her sons. So Draupadi mar- ried all the brothers together. Dhritarashtra and his son now knew that the Pan- davas were not only alive, but allied by marriage to a powerful monarch. Duryodhana was for carrying on the feud, but Dhritarashtra wisely listened to the advice of his uncle Bhisma, which was to send for the brothers and offer them half of his kingdom. So the kingdom was divided. The Pandavas got the worst of the land, a wilderness along the Jamuna River. They cleared it, built a fine city, and crowned Yuhisthira, the eldest brother, as their king. Now the five brothers lived in triumph and splen- dour, and Duryodhana hated them more than ever. His jealousy hatched a new plot for their ruin. The pious and noble Yudhisthira had a dangerous weak- ness for gambling. So Duryodhana challenged him to play dice with a clever sharper named Sakuni, know- ing that the king would feel bound in honour to accept. They played, Sakuni cheated, Yudhisthira lost game after game, staking his wealth, his king- dom, and finally his brothers, Draupadi and himself. All were now the slaves of Duryodhana's vengeance, subject to insult and cruelty, until Dhritarashtra in- tervened, and insisted that they be set at liberty and their kingdom given back. But Duryodhana worked upon his father until he obtained permission for another dice-match. The loser was to forfeit his kingdom and retire to the forest for twelve years, then he must live for a year in the city without being recognized; id he was dis- covered, the terms of exile would begin again. This game Yudhistthira also lost. So the Pandavas went back to the forest. They made a virtue of their mis- fortune, practising spiritual austerities and doing many heroic deeds. Once, during their wanderings, we are told, the brothers suffered greatly from thirst. Nakula, the youngest, was sent to look for water. He found a lake which was clear as crystal. As he bent over it, a voice said: 'Stop, child. First answer my questions. Then you may drink.' But Nakula, in his desperate thirst, paid no attention to the voice: he drank, and immediately fell dead. His brother Sahadeva went out to look for him. He, too, found the lake, and the same thing happened. In this manner, four of the brothers died. Last of all came Yudhisthira. He found the corpses, and began to lament. Then the voice told him: 'Child, first answer my questions, and then I will cure your grief and your thirst.' He turned, and saw Dharma, the personification of duty and virtue, standing beside him in the form of a crane. 'What is the road to heaven?' the crane asked. 'Truthfulness.' 'How does a man find happiness?' 'Through right conduct.' 'What must he subdue, in order to escape grief?' 'His mind.' 'When is a man loved?' 'When he is without vanity.' 'Of all the world's wonders, which is the most wonderful?' 'That no man, though he sees others dying all around him, believes that he himself will die.' 'How does one reach true religion?" 'Not by argument. Not by scriptures and doc- trines; they cannot help. The path to religion is trodden by the saints.' Dharma was satisfied. He revealed himself to Yu- dhisthira. Then he brought the four brothers back to life. When the period of exile was over at last, Yudhis- thira asked for the return of his kingdom; but Dury- odhana refused. Yudhisthira said he would be con- tent with just one village for himself and for each of his brothers. But Duryodhana, in the insanity of his greed, would not agree even to this. The older members of the family tried to arbitrate, and failed. So war became inevitable. Neighboring kings were drawn into the quarrel, until the whole of India was involved. Both sides wanted Krishna's aid. To both, Krishna offered the same choice. 'Either you can have the help of my kinsmen, the Vrishnis, in the battle,' he told them, 'or you can have me alone. but I shall take no part in the fighting.' Duryodhana chose the Vrishnis. Arjuna preferred to take Krish- na himself, as his personal charioteer. The battle was fought on the plain of Kurukshetra, a sacred place of pilgrimage. It was here, just before the armies engaged, that Krishna and Arjuna had the conversation which is recorded in the Bhagavad- Gita. The battle lasted eighteen days, and ended with the death of Duryodhana and the complete victory of the Pandavas. Thereafter, Yudhisthira became undisputed ruler of India. He reigned for thirty-six years. The story ends with the pilgrimage of Draupadi and the Pandavas up the heights of the Himalayas to the abode of God. On the way, the queen and four of the brothers died: they were not sufficiently pure to be able to enter heaven in their human bodies. Only Yudhisthira, the royal saint, journeyed on, ac- companied by his faithful dog. When they reached heaven, Indra, the king of gods, told him that the dog could not come in. Yudhisthira replied that, if this was so, he would stay outside heaven too; for he could not bring himself to desert any creature which trusted him and wished for his protection. Finally, after a long argument, both dog and king were admitted. Then the dog was revealed as Dhar- ma himself. This had been another test of Yudhis- thira's spiritual greatness. One more was to follow. When the king looked around him, he found that heaven was filled with his mortal enemies. Where, he asked, were his brothers and his comrades? Indra conducted him to a gloomy and horrible region, the pit of hell itself. 'I prefer to stay here,' said Yu- dhisthira, 'for the place where they are is heaven to me.' At this, the blackness and horror vanished. Yudhisthira and the other Pandavas passed beyond the appearance of hell and heaven into the true Being of God which is immortality. The Bhagavad-Gita (meaning, literally, the Song of God) is not regarded by Hindus as Sruti (scrip- tural teaching actually revealed by God to man, as in the Upanishads) but only as Smriti (the teaching of divine incarnations, saints or prophets, who fur- ther explain or elaborate the God-given truths of the scriptures). Nevertheless, it is the most popular bok in Hindu religious literature; the Gospel, one may say, of India. It has profoundly influenced the spiritual, cultural, intellectual and political life of the country throughout the centuries, and it con- tinues to do so to-day. Every westerner should study it if he wants to understand the mental processes of India's thinkers and leaders. The date of the Gita is generally placed by schol- ars somewhere between the fifth and second cen- turies, B.C. Most of them agree that it was not orig- inally a part of the Mahabharata itself, but this does not necessarily mean that it was composed later than the epic. It seems to have existed for some time independently. In the Gita dialogue there are four speakers: King Dhritarashtra, Sanjay, Arjuna and Krishna. Dhritarashtra is blind. The sage Vyasa (who is traditionally supposed to be the author of the Gita) offers to restore his sight, in order that he may watch the battle of Kurukshetra. But Dhritarashtra refuses. He cannot bear to see his kinsmen killed. So Vyasa confers the psychic powers of clairvoyance and clairaudience upon Sanjaya, who is Dhrita- rashtra's minister and charioteer. As they sit together in the palace, Sanjaya describes to his master every- thing he sees and hears on the distant battlefield. Through his mouth, the words of Krishna and Ar- juna are mediumistically reported. Occasionally, he pauses in his report to add descriptive remarks of his own. Sri Krishna (Sri is a title of reverence, such as Lord) has been called the Christ of India. There are, in fact, some striking parallels between the life of Krishn, as related in the Bhagavatam and else- where, and the life of Jesus of Nazareth. In both cases, legend and fact mingle; but the historical problem has nothing to do with a consideration of the message of the Bhagavad-Gita. To a seeker after spiritual reality who reads the Gita or the Sermon on the Mount, it cannot matter very much whether or not the historical Krishna and the historical Jesus ever existed at all. The Gits is not primarily concerned with Krishna as an individual, but with his aspect as Brahman, the ultimate Reality. When Krishna addresses Ar- juna, he sometimes speaks as an individual, but often as God Himself: For I am Brahman Within this body, Life immortal That shall not perish: I am the Truth And the joy forever. Arjuna, in his attitude to Krishna, also expresses this dual relationship. Krishna is the divine incarna- tion of Vishnu, Arjuna's chosen deity. Arjuna knows this——yet, by a merciful ignorance, he sometimes forgets. Indeed, it is Krishna who makes him forget, since no ordinary man could bear the stain of con- stant companionship with God. After the vision of Krishna's divine aspect, which is recorded in chap- ter eleven, Arjuna is appalled by the realization that he has been treating the Lord of the universe as 'friend and fellow-mortal.' He humbly begs Krish- na's pardon, but his awe soon leaves him. Again, he has forgotten. We may infer the same relation- ship between Jesus and his disciples after the vision of the transfiguration. King Dhritarashtra speaks but once. In fact, the whole narrative of the Gita is Sanjaya's answer to his single opening question.
